Alico, Robert K. (St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure, N.Y.), and Francis W. Liegey. Growth of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, under heterotrophic and anaerobic conditions. J. Bacteriol. 91:1112-1114. 1966.-Growth of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans was investigated under heterotrophic and anaerobic conditions. For initial growth to occur, it was found that the E(h) or redox potential must be at least 0 mv. Some carbon sources were tested, and those which could be metabolized by D. desulfuricans were pyruvate, lactate, glycerol, glyceraldehyde, and ribose. Observations were also made on the sulfate used during growth. Various amounts of sulfate were added and depleted within 48 hr. This may be correlated with the decline in growth. As the terminal electron acceptor was exhausted the organisms could not respire, and, with the subsequent energy depletion, the population decreased.

Electrochemical investigations of the interconversions between catalytic and inhibited states of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.
Studies of the catalytic properties of the [FeFe]-hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans by protein film voltammetry, under a H2 atmosphere, reveal and establish a variety of interesting properties not observed or measured quantitatively with other techniques. The catalytic bias (inherent ability to oxidize hydrogen vs reduce protons) is quantified over a wide pH range: the enzyme is prof...
متن کاملA new restriction endonuclease from the anaerobic bacterium, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Norway.
The purification and characterization of a new restriction endonuclease, Dde 1, from a sulfate-reducing, anaerobic bacterium, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Norway, is reported. The enzyme recognizes the sequence (see formula index) and cleaves at the position indicated by the arrows. The enzyme preparation obtained is suitable for restriction mapping an ligation.
متن کاملA method adapting microarray technology for signature-tagged mutagenesis of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans G20 and Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 in anaerobic sediment survival experiments.
Signature-tagged mutagenesis (STM) is a powerful technique that can be used to identify genes expressed by bacteria during exposure to conditions in their natural environments. To date, there have been no reports of studies in which this approach was used to study organisms of environmental, rather than pathogenic, significance. We used a mini-Tn10 transposon-bearing plasmid, pBSL180, that effi...
متن کاملAnaerobic vibrio-like organisms cultured from blood: Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Succinivibrio species.
Two unusual anaerobic vibrio-like organisms were recovered from blood cultures of two patients. One isolate was identified as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. It appeared to be the cause of a 24-h episode of fever, chills, and profuse perspiration. This is apparently the first documented report of human infection due to this organism. The second isolate was a Succinivibrio species. It has rarely be...
متن کاملA Case of Liver Abscess with Desulfovibrio desulfuricans Bacteremia
Desulfovibrio spp. are gram-negative, sulfate-reducing, and anaerobic bacteria found in the digestive tract of humans. Because Desulfovibrio spp. are infrequent causative agents of infectious diseases and are difficult to isolate and to identify from clinical specimens, the appropriate antibiotic therapy to infection with Desulfovibrio spp. has not been determined. We report the first case of l...
